The Source of lifelong learning in the British Virgin Islands.

WHO WE ARE:
We are charged by means of the Public Library Services Ordinance 1974 to be the legal depository for all government publications, annual and departmental Reports and any other publications published in the Virgin Islands.

The Library Services Department of the British Virgin Islands consists of five Branches: Road Town (Headquarters), Virgin Gorda, East End, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke Community Libraries.

MISSION:
The mission of the Library Services Department of the British Virgin Islands is to provide globally competitive information through technology and various formats to meet the educational, historical, recreational and cultural needs of the general public of the British Virgin Islands.

THE GOALS OF THE LIBRARY SERVICES DEPARTMENT:

Ø      To be recognised by government, private sector and the community as an important contributor to national development.

Ø      To be recognised as professional information providers.

Ø      Provide an environment which supports personal and professional development.

Ø      To be a reliable repository and access point for all BVI historical and cultural information.

Ø      To facilitate spread of knowledge and literacy.

You are entitled to expect that whenever you approach us you will receive quick, effective and courteous attention. At the Library Services Department you will find knowledgeable, well trained and courteous staff who are dedicated to effectively meeting your information needs.

WE PROVIDE A VARIETY OF SERVICES TO YOU:

Ø      Access to General Fiction (including Mysteries, Science Fiction, Romances, and Folktales) and Non-Fiction Book Collection

Ø      Access to Bestsellers

Ø      Access to approximately 40 periodical titles, newspapers, magazines

Ø      Reference, Research and Special Information Service Facilities

Ø      Book Repair and Binding Service

Ø      Inter-Library Loan Service

Ø      Special Collections eg.: Caribbean Studies Unit, West Indian fiction and non-fiction, Women Studies literature and BVI Government Reports

Ø      Professional and technical advice to other organizations and departments on setting up simple in-house information systems

Ø      Informational Displays

Ø      Internet Access and email services and do-it-yourself word processing

Ø      Special Information Services and Technical Assistance (by request)

Ø      Conference Room Facilities

Ø      Equipment usage which includes photocopier, computer stations, laser printer, library catalog and online database access, microfilm readers.

Ø      After School Programme

Ø      Saturday Morning Story Time Programme

PROVIDING HELP AND ASSISTANCE TO YOU:
While doing research, should you need to peruse materials such as newspapers, reports and journals to gather information you may request assistance from one of our officers who will show you where the material can be found.

TOURING THE PUBLIC LIBRARY:
Take a tour of our library and read a brief account of the operations of each Unit. Click on the Tours icon to the right. The tour also includes brief instructions on how to use the catalogue.
